4. You can refine your search by entering more than one
criteria.
A primary care physician (PCP) cares for your overall
health and is sometimes called a family doctor or general
practitioner. They are trained in several fields such as
family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, general
surgery, obstetrics, gynecology and psychiatry. Your
primary care physician can handle your routine medical
needs, including annual physicals, acute illnesses, and
preventative care.
A physician
specialist has advanced training. For example, a gastroenterologist
focuses on the gastrointestinal tract, stomach and intestines.
Credentialed healthcare practitioners include a
variety of disciplines. Among them are nurse
practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse
specialists, psychologists, occupational therapists,
physical therapists, speech and language pathologists and
optometrists.
