What exactly is an allergy?

An allergy is an adverse reaction to substances the body perceives as foreign, such as pollens, molds, dust mites, foods or microorganisms.  In some people, these substances cause the body to produce an allergic antibody known as Immunoglobulin E (IgE). The resulting symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, itching, and skin rashes.
