Skin Renewal Clinic Services: Spider Vein Treatments

Spider veins are small superficial blood vessels that appear red or blue in the skin. They commonly occur on the legs, but are also found on the face or other areas of the body. These dilated blood vessels can sometimes look like a spider web.

Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment for spider veins, mostly those found on your legs. An injection of saline solution irritates the vessel's lining, which causes the vessel to swell and stick together while the blood clots. Over a period of weeks, the vessel turns into scar tissue, which fades and eventually becomes barely noticeable. Depending on its size, a single blood vessel may have to be injected more than once, some weeks or months apart.

After several treatments, most patients can expect an 80 to 90 percent improvement. Treated spider veins usually disappear but similar veins may appear in the same general area.
