Muscular
Dystrophy Clinic
Muscular Dystrophy is a group of diseases, many of them inherited,
that affect the functioning of the muscles. Different combinations
of treatment and management are used with the different diseases.
Treatment options can include medication, surgery, exercises, physical
therapy, and physical support devices. Because of the importance
of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy to managing these conditions,
PT/OT is integrated completely into our clinic program. For more
patient information, see the Muscular
Dystrophy Association.
The Muscular Dystrophy Clinic is held on the fourth Thursday of every month, with pediatric patients seen in the morning and adults in the afternoon. Depending on a patient's needs, they may see any of the following specialists during their visit, either individually or in combination: neurologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, nurse practitioner, and genetic counselor.
Following the consultation, one or more of the team has a conversation with
the patient and their family to make sure they understand what's going on. They'll explain the
treatment plan and help with the next steps the patient is going to take.
