Genetic Counseling Services

Genetic testing is an important tool in both preventing and treating cancer, and the only Certified Genetic Counselors in northern Minnesota are right here at the Cancer Center.

Genetic testing can help patients identify genetic mutations that may indicate a higher risk for developing a particular cancer. For example, there are two known genetic mutations that can significantly increase a woman's chances of developing breast cancer. Before administering a test, the counselors take the time go over the basic principles of genetics with patients, and to discuss the benefits and limitations of genetic testing.

Our counselors also work with each patient's oncologist and other specialists to interpret test results in the context of that patient's family history information. They can also help the patient plan any necessary next steps. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call (218) 786-3625.
